In compiling this list I have attempted to include as many as possible of those officers and men who joined the battalion prior to the 1st July attack on Serre.
The information presented here has been compiled over many years from my research at numerous archives and collections, including the Public Record Office (now The National Archives) at Kew where medal rolls, army service records and battalion war diaries were consulted, and libraries, particularly those at Accrington, Burnley and Chorley, principally for their collections of local newspapers. Other resources which have proved invaluable include the publication "Soldiers Died in the Great War" and the database of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
I have had invaluable help from, in particular, John Garwood, Mike Harwood, David Ingham and Denis Otter who have readily shared information gathered during their own extensive researches. At the beginning of this project, William Turner generously allowed the use of some of his own excellent research. Although this now forms only a small part of what is presented here, his support was appreciated. Walter Holmes gave his opinion on some of the first entries. All the many others who have supported this project to make my work freely available through the web are acknowledged in the list of more than 700 sources which follows.
Last, and by no means least, I would like to thank the many Pals' relatives who have provided extra information and some wonderful photographs; these pages have come alive with their contributions.
